I’d think that you at least have a pretty good shot. Do you have any other school-related extra-curriculars? (Clubs or what not…) I heard they like those as well…

For the Ivy League a 3.7 is a fairly pedestrian GPA from a community college. The Ivy League schools fancy themselves as elite and they seek the cream of the crop students and credentials. I am afraid even a 4.0 from a “community college” may be something that fails to impress, much less a 3.7. Something else is going to have to grab their attention.

Your materials and SAT’s are going to have to shine for you to crack into that level of schooling. It sounds like you have one excellent reference and that is great! The activities and accomplishments you listed sound like they will help you to craft a compelling essay which will be an important element. I am sure other schools, Ivy wannabees if you will, may consider you so apply to these as well. Nothing wrong with the Vanderbilts and Carnegie Melons of the world.

This is horrible to say, but in the spirit of keeping it real, if you are a candidate from a minority group, your chances will be better. Specifically if you are a minority seeking an area of critical shortage such as a major in the sciences.

Good luck to you and congrats on scoring the reference from your mayor!

I am going to be completely honest here. A lot of Ivy League schools will not even take community college credit and a 3.7, while certainly respectable, isn’t up to snuff, especially because you are attending a community college (it would be different if you were attending a four year university and wanted to transfer). I don’t think it’s completely unrealistic to apply to an Ivy, but I hope you have backup schools that you would be happy going to as well. Ivy Leagues only have to take the cream of the crop and, while you are doing a lot of amazing things, your resume probably just isn’t competitive enough. Also, don’t smudge that last bulletpoint, that you “started a business”. Only put it down if you’ve actually DONE it.

Unless your letters of recommendations are astounding, I doubt you will be able to get into an Ivy League school. However, the competition should be less if you are entering the school as a sophomore or junior. Frankly, even if you had a 4.0, you would need something dramatic to make you stand out, as it is for everyone who applies.
