I got my first web design project. This is for a friend, and I dont intend to charge full price, but frankly I dont know what to charge.

Basically this friend is a Psychologist and the project sounds easy. Basically a 5-page site - a simple template, and she will provide the text.

She wants me to register the URL, get the hosting set up, and put the site together. I have my own reseller account so basically the hosting will be free for her -or I can charge a nominal fee. build it into the cost. I dont know if I should charge her a hourly rate or just one flat price for everything, but the entire site should probably take a day to do.

I figure that I want to do a few of these to build up my portfolio and go from there. And since she is a friend, my thinking is that I wont gouge her with the price or anything. But I really dont know what would be a fair price. What do you suggest? She has another friend who is talking about getting a website and her husband also has a small business but no site.. So this could be the beginning of something..

Oh another question. How much space should I allot for a site like this? I was thinking 100 MB is more than enough. 5 web pages using the same template - some photos - maybe one flash animation - but that is it..

Here’s the breakdown:

Host # 1:
- short subdomain (about 3 char. long)
- cPanel w/fantastico
- PHP and Perl Support
- Unlimited Sub-domains, E-mail, & MySQL Databases
- Somewhat inactive owner
- somewhat active hostees
- very slow response (I posted a question at the forum and I only got a reply from the owner 10 days later)
- not responsible for back-ups
- owner has to review apps first
- reseller at surpasshosting

HOST # 2:
- long subdomain (about 14 char. long)
- No cPanel but has Webmin control panel instead
- Unlimited space and bandwidth
- Up to 2 subdomains (more upon request) and up to 5 websites
- PHP 5.2, Ruby on Rails 1.2, MySql 5.0, phpMyAdmin, etc.
- regular offsite back-ups
- Very active owner (I sent 2 questions through email to him already and responded less than 30 minutes!)
- Somewhat inactive hostees
- very selective when it comes to hostees (But I fit)
- own server
I’m not linking to the sites because I don’t want to attract applications from noobs and abusers if you know what I mean…

The site I’m planning to make is a personal site and portfolio/fanlisting collective. I might buy a domain name and my own hosting account next year when I get my online payment stuff set-up. But for now, free-hosting will do.

What do you guys think? Any opinion is much appreciated.

Hello, I have a little problem, after I linked my domain (I bought at some third party reseller) with my hosting at godaddy I could access it entering domain.com but if I try WWW.domain.com it didn’t work. I submitted domain to search engines like domain.com.Afterwards I changed Aname record from @ to * and now it works both ways (with and without entering WWW) but when I find my site at google (or yahoo) and click on the link, it goes on domain.com and say Error 404 - Not found. I click refresh and finally it works. I guess Im loosing lots of visitors because of that, please tell me how to fix it. Godaddy answered they can’t help me.

First off, I’d like to list what I have used already:

HostGator

Some were decent and was a good run for the money but they always seem to have some issues with compatibility with eCommerce carts or have random downtime because they over stuff their servers.

I finally decided, I would either have to go VPS but I’d much rather pay $20 or below for a host, not $50. So as a last hope, I am asking the Yahoo community who have had personal hosting experiences to maybe give me a last glimpse of hope to use a Shared Host that can meet my needs, which aren’t much at all, just be able to function with Zen Cart or let me be able to customize the PHP output mode.

So please make your suggestion and by all means, if you use a VSP now, let me know how you like your company. A VPS seems much more likely to work for my businesses.

If the VPS can also let me resell and create separate control panels, that would be a bonus! Heh.
